Crohn's Update

So I haven't written anything about the bane of my existence in quite a while; Oh Crohn's Disease, how I wish I could forget you...

In the past few months my Crohn's symptoms have been limited to stomach/intestinal cramps, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. Despite sleeping 16 hours a day sometimes, and not leaving my couch for days at a time, I would say this is an improvement. It's been a year since my last fistula was removed and I don't have another one forming (that I know of). I've been living with this set of symptoms long enough that I've sort of gotten used to them. (Not that one can get used to swirling carpet patterns or asking your friends to take you home because of sudden onset sickness...) However, I know it could get better.

In the past two or three weeks however the phantom joint pain has returned. I say phantom because it disappears and reappears in different places with no warning.

Last summer my left hip was a huge problem. It would swell and lock up, I couldn't walk, and pain meds did little to help. I've also had "tennis elbow" like symptoms in my right arm at various intervals over the past few years. However it seems that I'm suddenly having pain in both hips, my ankles, and my elbow radiating into my hands. It's disconcerting at best. I can't take advil because it can cause intestinal bleeding (which we Crohnies already have) and pain meds have too many potential negative side effects for long term use so they don't give us a large enough supply to help deal with something like this.

I'm seeing a new GI Doctor in Atlanta on Thursday and I'm hoping he'll be able to shed some light on all of these symptoms. I wasn't too impressed with my last doctor and I'm hoping we can try something new or at least something that works. Generally stabbing sharp objects into your joints aren't a cause for celebration but I wouldn't mind another cortisone injection in my elbow right about now.

I really hope the new Doc can do something, and I can maybe get back to "normal" soon.

Note: I met a friend through twitter who has Crohn's AND joint pain, but hers is because she needs a hip replacement. Introducing Jessica Snellings.

Peace.

Cari

  1. I'm so excited for you to see Dr. Wolf! It kind of makes having my Crohn's symptoms again worth it knowing that I can help you feel better!

There was an incident...

Yesterday was shot day. Three pens, as expected, no big deal. Except one of my pens misfired. The needle didn't even touch the skin. I pressed down, counted to ten, pulled it away, and the Humira started spraying. I put my hand over the end to catch to fluid so that it didn't spray all over the carpet. According to the Humira rep with AbbVie this is a normal mechanical failure. I explained the incident, gave them some info from the package, and as soon as they confirm with my doctor a new pen will be on the way. I have extras in the fridge, so no lapse in dosing. Still, injecting is anxiety inducing enough without equipment failure. The other problem: I noticed two lumps in my right arm pit on Thursday morning. Around 9 AM it was the size of a ping pong ball. I sat in Sus' house all day while she cleaned, unable to help her because the building pain was just too much and movement would only make it worse. By dinner time it was roughly the size of a tennis ball, and more...

I don't take gym selfies...

The dermatologist said that sweating might help with the flares. Not losing weight necessarily, just being more active. For the first week I did 30 minutes on the treadmill, five times that week. I did it. I took my ass down stairs and did my treadmill time. I sometimes crashed afterward, but I did it. I bought new sports bras. I run to get my heart rate up then walk for a while, alternating as needed. I couldn't run with my old shitty sports bras. I bought the sports bras. Then there was a holiday weekend and a funeral and I didn't walk. And now I have hard spots in one arm pit and my stomach is raging. I did 20 minutes this morning. It was slow, I had to take a break, but it was 20 minutes. Now my stomach hurts and it's not getting better. But I did it. And I will try again tomorrow.

Clairol Hair Food and ELF Skincare

I pocked these up at Target because I had some Cartwheel coupons. After a few weeks of use I can say the shampoo is fantastic. It leaves your hair clean without weighing it down. Unfortunately the conditioner isn't heavy enough for damaged or color treated hair so I usually have to use a leave in conditioner spray after. The shampoo and conditioner together do work well to clarify if used intermittently between other shampoos. They also smell fantastic and I do use them whenever my hair feels heavy from product buildup.  The ELF skincare is great for the price point. I'm not sure if it's scented but if it is the smell isn't strong. I loved the serum and used it up quickly. The eye cream and face cream work well but it wasn't hydrating enough for me. It might work better for someone with combination or oily skin.  The ELF beauty blender is excellent. I've used it many times and I love it. It works incredibly well and is much cheaper than the n...
